Everyday Wellness

Sep 12, 2020

Are you overweight? Did you know that there is an undeniable connection between obesity and susceptibility to COVID 19 infection? Today, we are happy to welcome Dr. Benjamin Bikman as our guest. Dr. Bikman is interested in understanding more about chronic, modern-day diseases, the origins and consequences of obesity and diabetes, and the pathogenicity of insulin and insulin resistance. He is joining us today to talk about fat cells, insulin resistance, why obesity matters with COVID 19, metabolic flexibility, and how your diet contributes to insulin resistance. Stay tuned to find out more.

Dr. Benjamin Bikman earned his Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and was a postdoctoral fellow with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders. Currently, his professional focus, as a scientist and Associate Professor at Brigham Young University in Utah, is to better understand the role of elevated insulin in regulating obesity and diabetes, including the relevance of ketones in mitochondrial function. Be sure to listen in today to get Dr. Bikman’s perspective on fat cells and the role they play in your overall health.

IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN ABOUT:

  • The pivotal role that fat cells, as endocrine organs, play in your overall health.
  • The connection between obesity and susceptibility to COVID 19 infection.
  • How insulin “fertilizes” fat cells.
  • There are two different types of fat cells. One type makes people more susceptible to metabolic diseases than the other.
  • The more metabolically flexible you are, the less likely you will be to have complications from COVID or other illnesses.
  • You can lessen the likelihood of having any COVID 19 complications by maintaining a healthy weight and not taking too many medications.
  • The dietary component of having good health.
  • How better sleeping habits can help you to avoid insulin resistance.
  • How different kinds of oils influence your metabolic rate.
  • The diseases that are most influenced by insulin resistance. (In Dr. Bikman’s book, Why We Get Sick, he goes into a lot of detail about these diseases.)
  • Dr. Bikman's four pillars for reversing insulin resistance.
